Well-known artist Jef Claerhout passed away

Jef Claerhout was born in 1937 in Tielt. He spent his early years in Damme where he experimented with different materials such as stone, brass and stainless steel. He built an imaginative world, often based on mythology and science fiction. Welding unique fabulous sculptures in brass later became his signature.

In the mid-eighties, Jef moved to Oedelem, where he had a more spacious studio, situated in the middle of a beautiful garden designed and landscaped by himself. His world of strange birds has made a school. He created at the request of enthusiasts as well as for municipal authorities, hospitals, rest and care homes, churches, monasteries and companies. Countless sculptures such as Papageno in Bruges, Tijl uilenspiegel in Damme, Briek Schotte in Kanegem,… form iconic points of attraction in the public domain.

With Jef Claerhout’s death, Flanders loses a sculptor whose traces have become heritage in an often surprising and iconic way.
