CEO Alexander Wehrle has ruled out Sami Khedira’s rapid rise at VfB Stuttgart. “We have established a joint roadmap for its development. But he will now be an advisor to the board for at least a year and a half,” said the 47-year-old Wehrle when asked whether Khedira was a candidate for the vacant post on the sports board of the Swabian Bundesliga club.
Like his former national team colleague Philipp Lahm, Khedira has been a consultant for Stuttgart since mid-September. “I appreciate him very much. He brings a lot of expertise with him because of his past, but also because of the current efforts to complete the UEFA management course,” Wehrle said of the former VfB midfielder.
There had been a major upheaval at VfB in recent months. Bruno Labbadia took over on December 5 from interim coach Michael Wimmer, who in turn had only succeeded Pellegrino Matarazzo in October. In addition, sports director Sven Mislintat left the club and was replaced by Fabian Wohlgemuth.
