WEATHER FORECAST. Still (melting) snow on the way: 1 to 5 cm possible, code yellow for slippery roads | Weather news

UPDATEBe careful tonight for snow and slippery roads. According to the RMI, a snow carpet of 1 to 5 centimeters is possible due to winter showers during the night. The weather institute therefore also warns of slippery roads in various provinces: in Flanders, code yellow applies from Sunday evening to Tuesday night in Antwerp and Limburg.

Snowflakes fell in various places in Flanders today, such as in Pelt in Limburg and Zwevegem in West Flanders. A real snow carpet has not formed: the thin layer melted away quickly in most places. The snow may last longer later in the evening and this night, the RMI reports.

Winter showers are expected this evening and tonight, especially in the northeast of the country and in the Ardennes where several centimeters of snow are possible. In the center there are showers of snow or melting snow.

“Tonight, tonight and Monday through the evening, new snow showers may provide a snow layer of 1 to 5 cm in the Ardennes and also in the provinces of Antwerp, Limburg and Brabant. In the High Fens this can amount to an extra 5 to 10 cm or locally a little more,” says the RMI.

Code yellow for slippery roads

The RMI therefore warns about slippery roads in various provinces. In Flanders, code yellow applies for the time being from Sunday evening to Tuesday in Antwerp and Limburg. In Brussels and Flemish Brabant, code yellow applies from tomorrow morning until Tuesday. The warning for slippery roads has been in effect since Saturday evening in the Walloon provinces of Liège, Namur and Luxembourg.

The Roads and Traffic Agency (AWV) is also warning tonight of possible slippery roads and cycle paths throughout Flanders. The agency asks road users to pay close attention when they go on the road. AWV also calls again to report local (winter) showers via the KMI app. “This information helps our winter service to assess the risks of slippery conditions even more precisely,” it said.

The gritting services closely monitor the condition of the roads and cycle paths on Sunday evening and night. Where necessary, the gritters are deployed.

Also next week winter showers

Monday it will remain variable to heavily cloudy and the winter showers will also linger over the northeast of the country for a while. In Lower and Central Belgium, the showers fall as melting snow or sometimes snow. Several centimeters of snow fall on the Ardennes relief. The maximum temperatures fluctuate between -2 and 0 degrees in Upper Belgium and are slightly positive, from +1 to +4 degrees, in the rest of the country. The wind blows moderately from the west, but at the sea the wind blows quite strong to strong from the northwest.

Tuesday promises to be a calm and dry day with beautiful sunny periods. In the Ardennes, however, it is gray first in the morning. During the day the mercury climbs to +3 degrees at the sea, 0 degrees in the center and -3 degrees on the Ardennes relief. The wind blows moderately from the southwest, near the sea it blows more from the west.

Large amounts of snow on the way?

Wednesday we are dealing with an active disruption from France that is completely or partially moving across our country. The exact scenario is still uncertain for the time being as the disturbance is accompanied by noticeably softer air over France while cold air is maintained over the Netherlands.

We may experience some snow in Flanders at temperatures around freezing. The most snow would fall in the south of the country at temperatures below zero. In another scenario, most snow will fall in Flanders and freezing rain will first fall in the Ardennes, after which temperatures there may temporarily rise to 5 to 7 degrees.

LOOK. Is there really a lot of snow on the way? “There are major differences between the weather models”

“That is a big question mark,” says weatherman Frank Duboccage. “There is snow in the air, but where will the snow fall? There are major differences between the weather models. The European model mainly predicts a lot of snow in the Ardennes – up to more than 20 centimeters of snow – and then it would remain largely dry in Flanders. The American weather model calculates that snow further north and then you get a lot of snow in Flanders. The quantities are difficult to estimate, but it would still turn white in many places.”
