In 2015, Coen Swijnenberg and Sander Lantinga made a huge hit with their switch to John de Mol, but seven years later he broke the radioduo. And now? “Turning away from Talpa salary.”

The duo Coen Swijnenberg and Sander Lantinga was born at the public broadcaster: they started their daily radio show during the afternoon rush hour in 2006. It was such a great success that John de Mol managed to fish them in for a commercial adventure. The men started in 2015 at Radio 538 and then the cash started for years.

Joe-Transfer

As the afternoon duo of the Talpa flagship, Coen and Sander have collected millions of euros, but seven years later-in 2022-the same John de Mol mercilessly dismissed the two. They had to make room for Frank Dane in the afternoon and were only allowed to make a program together on Friday evening.

Small problem: Coen and Sander depend on each other, and cannot do much of each other separately. And so they switched to competitor Joe, the new sister of Qmusic. After having done the afternoon rush hour for decades, the men now do the morning show. That is the moment when most people listen to radio.

Talpa salary

AD journalist Stefan Raatgeverge asks Coen and Sander in an interview Whether it is just a kicking without a Talpa salary. “Did you actually have to withdraw from the Talpasalarissen from the Golden Radio Times?”

Coen on that: “When we made other programs there, we already went back something in salary. But believe me: we are here in the first place from love for the radio. And with regard to the money you still don’t have to feel sorry for us.”

Donald Duck

According to colleague Sander, you also have very nice secondary employment conditions at the publisher’s group DPG, of which Joe is part,. “Thanks to DPG, I now have the Donald Duck for free.”

Does Coen think afterwards that John made a big mistake? “Uh, we had not seen that move coming. And at the same time we have put it into perspective from day one. Everyone at work sometimes has to deal with an annoying measure. And well, whether it has been wise, they can decide for themselves.”

Number one

In the morning Joe is now the fourth channel of the Netherlands, after Qmusic, Radio 538 and NPO Radio 2 (in that order). Those channels have Mattie & Marieke, Tim Klijn and Jan-Willem Roodbeen in the morning.

Coen: “With Joe we want to be number 1. And I believe that we will eventually be.”
