What started as a small-scale fan day unexpectedly grew into a historic farewell. “What actually started very small has become bigger and bigger,” says bassist Jan Tuijp with a wink. Originally, the band was not supposed to perform at all. That changed when drummer Jack Veerman Tuijp played an old Irish folk song. “He thought it suited us. When I heard it, I was immediately sold,” says Tuijp. Ultimately, the other band members also managed to be persuaded.
Surprise for the fans
The song grew into the new single ‘Thanks’recorded on the occasion of the band’s 60th anniversary. The idea was to give the song as a gift to the fans, but it didn’t stop there. “As a surprise, we wanted to play the song live with the children’s choir the Zangertjes van Volendam. In the end there were no fewer than six songs,” says Tuijp. “And the great thing is: the fans didn’t know anything.”
Family members of the band were also invited. “It was a great opportunity to let our children and grandchildren see us live.”
