Waste processor Talen was not allowed to accept hazardous waste, still fined 5,000 euros

Waste collector Albert Talen still has to pay a fine of five thousand euros with the province of Overijssel for accepting prohibited, hazardous waste. Talen was fined earlier, but did not agree and appealed.

The Council of State agrees with the province of Overijssel and so the fine remains, reports RTV East.

In Meppel, Talen was active under the name of Milieustraat Meppel BV. In 2016, he received a permit from the municipality of Meppel to store waste on Hesselterlandweg. The site was then owned by Lagros BV, which leased it to Milieustraat Meppel. In 2018 there was a fire at the waste site.

In 2017, under the eyes of inspectors from Overijssel, a load of waste with leaking paint cans was collected at the former landfill in Staphorst. Talen did not have a permit for this. The province had already made it clear to him with a penalty that this was not allowed. It happened anyway and so the penalty was converted into a fine.

Talen does not consider himself guilty. He himself was not present at the landfill and therefore could not prevent the acceptance of the waste. Contractors were commissioned by the province of Overijssel to remove waste, because there was more than Talen was allowed to collect. He had been told not to come to the landfill that day.

According to the province, the prohibited hazardous waste was accepted by a Talen employee. Supervisors found at his office that the waste had been accepted and the accompanying consignment note had been signed by an employee. This has provided the Council with hard evidence of the violation.
