Was he on the verge of being a lead singer with AC/DC?

According to the gnarly motto “The older, the doller”, riot rock veteran Iggy Pop turns it up again. At the end of this week (January 6th) his new album “Every Loser” will be released. Depending on how you count his diverse band and solo projects, it is the 20th solo album since 1977’s “The Idiot”.

The era of the now 75-year-old with the Michigan maniacs The Stooges (or Iggy and the Stooges) began in 1969. The style-defining album “Fun House” was released a year later. More than 50 years full of stuff and whole lotta adrenaline from the fighting spirit from Ann Arbor.

No wonder that the “New York Times” has now conducted a major interview with him, which, in addition to all sorts of lifestyle dönekes, also reveals a remarkable career volte.

Iggy Pop says he was once asked if he wanted to be the vocalist for Australian hard rock berserkers AC/DC.

“They had a manager many years ago when I was rebuilding the Stooges – and I hadn’t moved to England yet,” he says. “And then this guy said, ‘Are you interested in joining AC/DC?’ The band is looking for a singer right now.’”

AC/DC in London in August 1979.

Pop thought for a moment and soon found himself “not very suitable for the job. I listened to records from that time and thought that I didn’t fit into this role. So I didn’t think at all: ‘Heavy-duty, I don’t like her!’ Everything was done pretty well. Meticulous, solid work. But I’m not THAT what they need.”

The NYT article does not state exactly when this offer was made.

Pop historians know that Pop moved to London in 1972 to record the album Raw Power with a newly formed Stooges line-up. This album was released in February 1973.

AC/DC, on the other hand, were only formed nine months later and only released their debut album “High Voltage” two years later, in February 1975.

After Bon Scott’s death in February 1980, AC/DC considered numerous candidates to replace him. The choice finally fell on Brian Johnson, who sang on the album “Back in Black” in the same year and who, even after being deaf for the time being, is the official frontman of the group.

The anals also record that Iggy Pop met Scott at least once. There is a historical photo on the Internet that shows the two in 1977 in the rock club “Whiskey A GoGo” in Los Angeles. They then have a backstage conversation, with Pop funnily splattered all over with purple paint.

He doesn’t exactly remember the colorful talk. “I had a wonderful encounter with Bon somewhere. We were both drunk and stoned,” he explains. “Sometimes I see pictures in my mind’s eye. But no idea when and where that could have been. It’s clear, THAT’s me with Bon. I loved what he did.”
