In 2024, Fort Breendonk attracted 113,182 visitors for a history lesson about one of the darkest pages in the history of the world and Europe. The Royal Military Museum and the Commando Bunker are not far behind, with an increase of 2.56 percent (103,843 visitors) in Brussels and 9.88 percent (15,475 visitors) in Kemmel (Heuvelland). The Trench of Death in Diksmuide attracted 49,349 visitors, a slight decrease compared to 2023.
“These impressive figures confirm the importance of passing on memory and history to younger generations,” the War Heritage Institute said. “For the institute, we are also exceeding the expectations that were included in the strategic plan a few years ago.”
