It is an adjustment of the asylum measures Act. That law must limit the inflow and relieve the reception with the new policy under shorter residence permits and stricter rules for family reunification. But at the last minute, the law was sharpened by a tightening of the PVV: criminalizing illegality.

That causes noise. Not only illegal residence would become punishable, but also the help of citizens or organizations. Even handing out a bowl of soup can be punishable. That is why asylum minister Van Weel adjusts the law via a so -called ‘novella’. He arranges that only illegal immigrants themselves are punishable, but not the people who help them.

That novelle must also be treated by the House of Representatives. Because Chamber goes in election position after this week, it is uncertain whether the bowl of soup discussion can still be discussed by the current House of Representatives, or whether it moves to the new parliament. As far as VVD and BBB are concerned, the parties still have to confess color for the elections.

Van Weel says he wants to respond to the call from VVD and BBB to hurry “I’m going to ask the chairman of the Council of State if he can handle the advice urgently.” In the debate, the minister explains to work hard on the so -called ‘novella’, in which reactions from interest groups are now being processed. “You see civil servants here, but most of the work on the novella, if you see light burning in the tower of the Ministry of Justice, then it is the officials of asylum and migration.”

CDA important link

The CDA missing in the last asylum debate voted by the tightening against the law, but with this short story it should become clear whether the party is still behind the law. The CDA is mainly an important link in the Senate and needed for a majority. In the Lower House, the role of the PVV is important: if that party votes against the weakening of its own plan to criminalize illegality, a majority seems to be out of sight for the entire law.

Whether the Chamber actually deals with the law before the elections depends on the timing of the advice and whether there is a majority in the Chamber for the request. Parties such as PVV and GL/PvdA do not want to anticipate this.
