Voetbalvereniging Gieten is officially 100 years old today. In honor of this special milestone, the club receives the Royal Medal of Honor, a tribute that symbolizes the special merits of the Association for the Community.

The presentation takes place during an official reception on this anniversary day.

VV Gieten was founded in 1925 under the name ‘Gieter Boys’. In November of the same year, the club was given its current name. In the early years, the players wore completely black uniforms, which gave them the nickname ‘the black shirts’ in the press. Only in 1929 did the club switch to the well-known red-white shirts and the white pants were added in the mid-50s.

In recent research into club history, a remarkable discovery emerged: VV Gieten appears to have existed at least a year earlier than always assumed, but 1925 remains as a founding year. Jan Mulder has compiled a book about the rich club history, in which he describes the highs and lows of a century of Gieten.

In a tent at the VV Gieten sports fields you can also view dozens of photos from the early years of the club to now. Freddy Reumbrink, chairman of the VV Gieten board: “It’s beautiful, all those photos hanging there. It is really a party before and through us. People come here to walk by, these are pictures of the very beginning to this year, in black and white and in color. Most are also in the book.”

VV Gieten has grown over the years into an important meeting place for the village and the surrounding region. With more than five hundred members, spread over more than twenty teams. The use of VV Gieten for the community does not go unnoticed. This afternoon, the King’s Commissioner in Drenthe, Jetta Klijnsma, presented the Royal Medal of Honor on behalf of King Willem-Alexander.

After the official reception there will be a big anniversary party tomorrow. In the afternoon there is a reunion for former members and a special youth afternoon. In the evening the party starts in the party tent at the sports park, with live music and plenty of fun.
