Volleyball Super League: Monza beats Cisterna and mortgages a place in the playoffs

Vero Volley loses the first set, then spreads and conquers a decisive victory to reach the top eight

Cisterna-Monza 1-3 (25-20, 23-25, 23-25, 22-25) Heavy home stop for Top Volley that loses the direct match against Monza and sees the playoff goal get away. The former Szwarc and Maar celebrate at the Palasport in Cisterna. Both formations present themselves to the challenge in a waning phase (Davyskiba is missing from Vero Volley, injured): Monza has not won for two rounds, but the Pontine formation is no better, which is back from three defeats. Soli relies on the tested sextet with the diagonal Baranowics-Dirlic, central Rossi-Zingel, Kaliberda-Sedlacek in the band, free Catania. Eccheli focuses on the direction of Zimmermann and the offensive skills of Grozer, Szwarc and Maar. Excellent start for the hosts who immediately extend to 6-3 thanks to Grozer’s mistake; the German recovered shortly after with a winning diagonal from place one which kept Monza 3 lengths down. Then a small blackout from the pontini, the guests take advantage of it with Maar restoring parity (11-11). Excellent starting point from Rossi under the net and Top Volley is back on +3. Ace of the newcomer Gutierrez and partial mortgaged for Cisterna (23-19), then it is Baranowicz’s starting goal that deservedly delivers the partial to the biancoblu. 38% in attack for both teams.

Monza reaction

In the second set we fight point to point with Kaliberda who restores the distance thanks to a precise diagonal (7-7). He tries to escape Monza, but after a long exchange Sedlacek, well served by Baranowicz, signs the new tie (13-13). Great balance with Vero Volley that constantly tries the stretch and Soli’s formation ready to fight back. Arrogant attack by Zingel and Cisterna puts his nose forward (19-18). Then Gutierrez enters and puts his seal on service by bringing the pontini to +3. However, Eccheli’s team finds the strength to react by placing a decisive break of 5 points and making the decisive pass with the former Szwarc (22-21). The Lombard sextet will no longer be reached, deservedly winning the partial again thanks to Szwarc (25-23). Among the biancoblù Dirlic undertone and various smudges in the defensive phase. Third set: excellent start by Cisterna ahead 7-4 thanks to the winning serve by Sedlacek. The guests rely on Szwarc’s broadsides, which is a factor in this phase of the match, and go down to -1. After a really long exchange Gutierrez resolves with a lob and the pontini remain ahead 15-14. Excellent block by Hernandez and Monza finds parity (17-17). The teams face each other openly showing a great desire to prevail over the opponent. Szwarc hurts again: first he equalizes and then takes the stage with a powerful ace (21-20). Eccheli’s team appears revitalized compared to the start of the race and wins the partial again thanks to a super Szwarc (25-23). Fourth set: Cisterna gets off to a bad start with Sedlacek’s mistake and guests ahead 6-4. Broadside by Dirlic and it’s back to a draw (8-8). The teams are aware that there are important points up for grabs and do not want to concede anything to their opponents. Gross error by Hernandez and score once again in balance (16-16). Monza continues to show great team spirit, Cisterna suffers in reception. Decisive moment of the match with the two ex Cisterna on the shields: Szwarc and Maar turn the situation around from 9 meters. Then the error in Sedlacek’s serve gives the deserved success to Vero Volley. Tanker with a foot and a half out of the fight for a play off placement. (Diego Rocks)
