The start in Liverpool was not satisfactory for Florian Wirtz. The criticism of him becomes louder. A DFB boss defended the ex-Leverkusen so.

DFB sports director Rudi Völler has publicly strengthened national players Florian Wirtz after the recently emerging criticism of him. “Florian shouldn’t be crazy,” said the 65-year-old of the “picture”. “I have no concerns: he will still show the English.”

Wirtz switched from Bayer Leverkusen to FC Liverpool in summer for up to 150 million euros. In England, however, the 22-year-old was not yet able to go out, did not score a single goal and only delivered a template in nine competitive games. The former English international Wayne Rooney and Jamie Carragher have recently criticized Wirtz.

The Liverpool legend had even called for the 0-1 defeat of the “Reds” in the Champions League at Galatasaray Istanbul to take the DFB star out of the team for the time being. “He’s just not up at all,” said Carragher.

Meanwhile, Völler referred to the major change for Wirtz since his change. “Florian plays in a new league and a new club. These are normal adaptation problems. Almost every professional has it,” said the 1990 world champion in the Premier League in terms of transfer. And further: “I don’t have the touch of a doubt that he makes a breakthrough with his runner and playful class.”

At the weekend, Wirtz has the next chance to finally demonstrate his playful class in England. Liverpool will meet FC Chelsea in London on Saturday (from 6.30 p.m. in the live ticker at T-Online).
