VKW is bottom after a 2-1 loss against SVBO

Due to the 2-1 defeat against Barger Oosterveld, VKW ended up in last place in the first division J. However, the scoring ability of the team from Westerbork was insufficient in this relegation battle. “We did it to ourselves,” sighed the losing coach Bernd van Bolhuis afterwards. SVBO can breathe a little easier thanks to the first competition victory

In this relegation match it became clear that both teams did not simply end up in the bottom regions. Opportunities were missed with great regularity on both sides. Perhaps the deadlock in the first four league matches also had to do with the limited scoring drive of their best strikers. At VKW, Anjo Willems had only scored one goal until this relegation crash, while all-rounder Ronald Gerdes from SVBO was still completely ‘dry’.

Difficult corner

To his relief, Gerdes broke the deadlock by beautifully scoring SVBO’s second goal more than fifteen minutes before the end. The quick attacker reached the ball earlier than VKW goalkeeper Martijn Mulder. Gerdes then scored from a difficult angle: 2-0. “Fortunately, I am no longer dry in the competition,” Gerdes responded happily afterwards. “Things haven’t gone exactly as planned so far in the competition, but this goal has left me with a good feeling.”

Willems scored his second competition goal in injury time with a beautiful arc: 2-1. To his disappointment, however, the tying goal yielded nothing. “We lack the scoring ability. We should have taken some distance in the first half.”

Spacious position

In the first half, VKW failed to close the match. The otherwise well-playing Jeroen Welles in particular ended up in a good position three times, but in the final phase he could not control his nerves. SVBO was therefore able to maintain the clean sheet with some luck. After just half a minute, a shot from the free-standing Welles ended up out of reach of SVBO goalkeeper Lennon Ebeltjes on the roof of the goal. In the first half, Welles shot twice more into the side netting for Ebeltjes.

Fortunately, SVBO took the lead right after Welles’ first chance. VKW goalkeeper Martijn Mulder made a mistake, after which Dylan Wessels was able to easily open the score: 1-0. Afterwards it was clearly visible why both teams camped in the basement of the first division J. Careless loss of ball, wrong passes and frequent unnecessary loss of ball were the causes of a not very high level.

It sucks as hell

After the break, VKW gained the upper hand, but it did not yield any results for the team of coach Bernd van Bolhuis. Only Willems was close to the equalizer, but thanks to central defender René Wolbers, his effort was cleared from the goal line. Durk de Jong, who was sent to the front, also became dangerous when he headed. However, Ebeltjes saved skillfully, after which Willems hit the post from the rebound.

After Gerdes’ goal (2-0) and Willems’ tying goal (2-1), things became even more exciting. However, SVBO held firm. “It was tough, but I’m glad we held out in this difficult phase,” SVBO coach Peter Timmer responded. Van Bolhuis was bummed a little further away. “We could have taken a 3-0 lead at halftime. Then we could have played the match freewheeling.”
