FOOTBALL – The Dutch women’s football team have won the home match against Cyprus with a monster score. After the 0-8 in Larnaca last year, the Orange squad won the sixth group match in the World Cup qualification in Groningen with 12-0. Vivianne Miedema from Hoogeveen was the top scorer in the team of national coach Mark Parsons with six goals.
With the win, the Netherlands has taken back the lead in the group from Iceland, which had won 5-0 against Belarus on Thursday. The Orange squad has 14 points, 2 more than Iceland, which has played a game less. Only the group winner qualifies directly for the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand in 2023. On September 6, the Netherlands and Iceland will meet in the last group match.
The football players would play the group match against Belarus next Tuesday. The KNVB previously announced that it would not play any matches against Russia and Belarus and has now removed the qualifying match with Belarus from the program. The association remains “in talks with UEFA about the match against Belarus”.
