Vitiligia: the new therapies – iO Donna

LVitiligo manifests itself with depigmentation, due to the absence or reduction of the cells that produce melanin, which leads to the formation of milky white spots.

New therapies

Alongside phototherapy, considered the reference therapy, possibly associated with topical corticosteroids or to be taken orally, the way is being paved for new drugs known as JAK inhibitors.

“They are molecules that have been studied for vitiligo, some for systemic treatment and one for the topical route approved by the American FDA and which has recently received the green light from the EMA’s Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use” he reports Mauro Picardoof the Unicamillus International University and coordinator of the Vitiligo Task Force of the Italian Society of Dermatology and sexually transmitted diseases.

The re-pigmentation of the skin for the new topical therapy can affect from 30 to 7090 percent, for a significant proportion of patients with a disease not exceeding 10 percent of the body surface, which also involves the face (the part most receptive to treatment).
