The international payment system Visa is taking “prompt measures” to enforce the sanctions imposed against Russia due to a special military operation in the Donbass, says in her statement. The company said that it is also ready for possible new restrictions if they are introduced.

The company said that its foundation will provide $2 million to UNICEF to provide humanitarian assistance to the country, and send donations to the Red Cross.

On the morning of March 1, Mastercard announced that it had disconnected several Russian financial institutions from its payment system due to sanctions. About which banks in question, the company did not specify.

The notice to one of the banks, which RBC got acquainted with, said that Mastercard’s decision was made due to violations of the rules of the payment system, since banks should not harm the reputation of “signs” (Mastercard payment system), according to their copyright holder.

Clients of sub-sanctioned banks will not be able to pay with Visa and Mastercard cards abroad and in online stores registered in countries that support sanctions. However, the already issued cards of these payment systems will continue to be valid in Russia, since payments are processed within the country by the internal National Payment Card System, created in 2014.
