CHow to define the phenomenon of violence against women Gender violence is one “underreported epidemic”difficult to track statistically Italy is the fourth EU country to have introduced a legal definition of femicide into the penal code. The vote in the Chamber was held in International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE) defines violence against women as an “underreported epidemic”: reporting is in fact hindered by stigma, shame and lack of support services.

Statistically tracing the phenomenon between countries is also difficult because the data comes from too different sources, which are influenced by other factors. What emerges is therefore only the tip of the iceberg. An attempt is made to legally define the problem. The Eige provides concrete examples linked to four specific types of violence: physical, sexual, psychological and economic. Femicide is useful for understanding gender violence: in 2023, the 60% of women and girls killed intentionally were victims of partners or family members; for males, it’s 11%.
