Violation of financial rules: Premier League punishes Everton FC with a large point deduction

As of: November 17, 2023 2:59 p.m

Everton FC will be deducted ten points in the current Premier League season after an independent commission concluded that the Liverpool football club had breached the Premier League’s financial rules.

Everton FC announced on its website on Friday (11/17/23) that they were “shocked and disappointed by the decision” and announced that they wanted to take action against the verdict.

Everton FC – “Disproportionate and unfair”

The Premier League referred the club to the commission last March over alleged breaches of its profitability and sustainability rules in the period up to the 2021/22 season. According to these rules, the league’s clubs are allowed to make a maximum loss of 105 million pounds (around 120 million euros) within three years. The commission now came to the conclusion that Everton had exceeded this amount by almost 20 million pounds (just under 23 million euros).

As a result of the point deduction, Everton will slip to second-to-last place in the table with just four points after twelve games. The Toffees are still ahead of Burnley FC with the same points only because of the better goal difference. This means that the club, which has barely managed to stay in the league in recent seasons, is threatened with relegation.

“The club believes that the commission has imposed a completely disproportionate and unfair sporting sanction on it,” said Everton’s website. “The club will also monitor with great interest the decisions in all other cases affecting the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules.”
