Photographer Sam de Joode rushed to the beach of Castricum last night, where the natural phenomenon occurred between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. was clearly visible. And he wasn’t the only one who set out.

The light was a nice surprise for Sylvano Rosenberg from Medemblik. He likes to take pictures of the Northern Lights and never misses an opportunity. “I keep an eye on apps several times a day, but nothing was announced yesterday morning.”

At about four o’clock it suddenly became clear that Rosenberg had to get his things together like crazy. “Normally I go to Den Oever or Petten, but if it is that strong, I can also see it at the IJsselmeer,” says Sylvano. And it showed! In Medemblik he did not need any equipment to see the Northern Lights in full glory.

Not everyone was lucky enough to see the Northern Lights. Radio presenter Pieter Kok from the Breakfast Table at NH quickly went outside last night, but did not see the light from his garden in Westzaan.

Rare

The Northern Lights can normally be seen north of the Arctic Circle, but during a period of maximum solar activity the sky lights up here too. The natural phenomenon is caused by bursts of charged particles on the sun that enter our atmosphere. There, the particles collide with molecules, which causes the spectacular light.
