The accident happened along the busy Poperingseweg, around 3.40 pm. During a maneuver, the two cars collided. One car ended up in the canal. The driver of that car was trapped and had to be freed by the fire brigade.
Both drivers were eventually taken to the hospital. The traffic was diverted for a while via the intersections with Bellestraat and Grote Branderstraat to the parallel Northern ring between Ypres and Poperinge.
