As of: March 13, 2024 8:17 a.m

The cup fairytale of 1. FC Saarbrücken continues. After the last-minute win against Gladbach, the team moves into the semi-finals of the DFB Cup.

1. FC Saarbrücken has done it again: after FC Bayern Munich and Eintracht Frankfurt, the blue-blacks have knocked the third Bundesliga team out of the DFB Cup.

Kai Brünker scored the FCS’s third cup sensation with his last-minute goal in injury time. For coach Rüdiger Ziehl, the fact that this coup was successful is “a miracle, but also a bit of quality.”

It was unbelievable that the team was able to counterattack and had four people in the opponent’s box. “Kai was knocked out standing up, how cleanly he hits the ball is unbelievable,” Ziehl enthused after the game.

Fans celebrate their team

There was also no stopping the fans in the stadium after the sensation. The joy of the victory was enormous and left many people speechless.

“I have no words,” said one fan to SR. “We are in the semi-finals against Kaiserslautern. Nobody can imagine that,” said another happily.

There were similar reactions online. Under the SR info Facebook post about the victory of 1. FC Saarbrücken, one user wrote: “Unn now die Pfälzer” accompanied by several blue and black hearts.

The victory was apparently even celebrated in Peru. “What a game!!! Historic victory!! Congratulations Saarbrücken and I hope a win against FCK too,” greeted another user from Lima.

The Saarland Football Association also congratulates: “Congratulations to 1. FC Saarbrücken on reaching the semi-finals. The entire Saarland football family is proud of 1. FC Saarbrücken. The blue-blacks now face the cup derby against 1. FC Kaiserslautern in the semi-finals .”

Big disappointment at Gladbach

However, it wasn’t a nice evening for Bundesliga club Mönchengladbach. Immediately after the game, the players had to justify themselves to several angry fans on the sidelines of the field.

And there was also criticism internally. “I have absolutely no understanding for the team’s performance in the second half,” said Borussia Mönchengladbach’s sports director Roland Virkus. He was totally disappointed and couldn’t understand the way he was eliminated.

Fans dream of the final in Berlin

While the dream of the DFB Cup is over for Gladbach, the path continues for 1. FC Saarbrücken on April 2nd. Then the team meets arch-rival Kaiserslautern in Saarbrücken’s Ludwigspark.

And how this game will end is already clear, at least for the fans: “Berlin, Berlin, we’re going to Berlin,” was the sound that rang through Ludwigspark on Tuesday evening.

The program “Guten Morgen” also reported on this topic on March 13, 2024 on SR 3.
