Lineth Beerensteyn from VfL Wolfsburg in the game at Real Madrid

AUDIO: VfL women: Beerensteyn also leaves Wolfsburg (1 min)

Bloodletting on the Mittelland Canal

As of: April 28, 2026 3:20 p.m

The restructuring of the VfL Wolfsburg squad continues unabated. As the Lower Saxony team officially announced, striker Lineth Beerensteyn and substitute goalkeeper Nelly Smolarczyk will also be leaving the club in the summer.

Smolarczyk, the number three goalkeeper for the “Wolves” behind national goalkeeper Stina Johannes and Martina Tufekovic, had just made her competitive debut last Sunday in the 3-1 defeat at Eintracht Frankfurt. VfL also congratulated her on his Social media channels with the words: “We are incredibly proud of you”.

But your days in Wolfsburg, like those in Beerensteyn, are numbered. As the club announced in its Instagram story on Monday, both players will be leaving the club after the current season.

VfL offensive in transition: Beerensteyn, Popp and Endemann gone

Beerensteyn moved from Juventus Turin to VfL in the summer of 2024. In the current Bundesliga season, the 123-time Dutch international has nine goals in 18 games in the Bundesliga, making her the second-best goalscorer behind the currently injured Alexandra Popp, who will also be leaving the club in the summer. The VfL icon is moving to the up-and-coming Borussia from Dortmund. BVB is currently still playing in the third-tier regional league, but wants to be promoted to the Bundesliga in the medium term.

In addition, the German national player Vivien Endemann will also be leaving the VW club and moving to Liverpool FC in England. And there will also be a big change on the Mittelland Canal away from the pitch. Like Popp, Wolfsburg’s current sports director for women’s football, Ralf Kellermann, is moving to Dortmund to help advance the project there.

Will Wolfsburg win the cup?

This season, after the bankruptcy in Frankfurt, VfL is still concerned with two things in order to “save” the season: second place in the league, to make the runner-up and the Champions League clear – there is also the cup final against champions FC Bayern Munich (May 14th, 4 p.m.).

The long-time boss of the “Wolves” will leave the Bundesliga club at the end of the season. The change, officially confirmed on Monday, is a turning point for the club.

With Popp, the people of Lower Saxony are losing their great identity figure – she has shaped Wolfsburg women’s football like no other. Honoring a club legend.
