Wolfsburg had gone into the season with the aim of Europe. But at the moment it looks strongly as if the “wolves” are being missed.
The VfL Wolfsburg’s European dream threatens to burst into series after the third defeat. The team of coach Ralph Hasenhüttl also lost to Union Berlin after the games against Augsburg and Heidenheim and slips into the table to twelve. The game in the capital ended 1-0 for the hosts. Benedict Hollerbach scored the decisive goal for Union in the 63rd minute.
The pressure on Ralph Hasenhüttl continues to grow. After the home bankruptcy against Heidenheim, Managing Director Peter Christiansen had avoided a commitment, the “kicker” reported several votes in the club that count on one from Hasenhüttls in summer.
With Union, on the other hand, Steffen Baumgart sits safely in the saddle thanks to a strong second half of the season. The “Iron” now have eleven points ahead of the relegation place.
The first major chance of the game belonged to the hosts. In the 2nd minute, a header from Leopold landed crossing after a corner on the post, the margin went just over the goal – Wolfsburg got away with a blue eye. So right from the start, the wolves were noted the defensive, which was thinned out due to injuries: coach Ralph Hasenhüttl had to do without his regulars Denis Vavro, Konstantinos Koulierakis and Sebastiaan Bornauw. 18-year-old David Odogu gave his Bundesliga debut, but was not yet well recorded with the defensive Yannick Gerhardt.
The Köpenickers were much more courageous and more dangerous from the start. Kamil Grabara parried a low shot from Janik Haberer from 13 meters in great need. In a tough game, VfL only came into play after half an hour: Patrick Wimmer (26th) came to a conclusion, but Union keeper Frederik Rönnow defused from an acute angle. So things went goalless and after 45 minutes quite balanced.
Just as the first half ended, the second began: Wolfsburg was on the trigger. Jakub Kaminski (52nd) came right in the penalty area and then failed from an acute angle to Rönnow. And then suddenly Union again: A long throw -in by Josip Juranović came over across the field to Hollerbach, who spoiled the ball into the goal, because Grabara came out. Wolfsburg then tried far too tentative to equalize – but still got a great opportunity: the former Unioner Kevin Behrens missed from a short distance (89.).
