VfL Wolfsburg: Kovac explains Marmoush substitution as a “rarity”

Striker before free transfer

In in the 46th minute, out in the 64th minute: Wolfsburg’s Omar Marmoush personally experienced a very weak day in his team’s 5-1 win at VfL Bochum. The substitution had purely sporting reasons, confirmed VfL trainer Niko Kovac and had absolutely nothing to do with the free transfer of the attacker, which was confirmed during the week.

“I took him down because I wasn’t satisfied with the defensive performance,” the coach explained his measure, which he himself described as a “rarity”. However, it wasn’t that rare: Marmoush is the seventh player this Bundesliga season to have had to leave the field less than 20 minutes after being substituted on (see statistics).

“I had the feeling that we were under pressure,” continued Kovac, who brought Marmoush into the second half when the score was 3-0 for VfL Wolfsburg. In fact, Bochum pressed forward after the restart and had chances to score. Ultimately, the Lower Saxony were able to bring home the away three and continue to be involved in the fight for international business before the remaining five match days.

The Egyptian, who will be leaving in the summer, was displeased with the early substitution. “The disappointment is great. He’s sad, maybe angry,” Kovac said of the 24-year-old’s reaction, adding: “It’s a maturing process. He has to learn from that.” With a view to his expiring contract, “open and honest talks” had been held, but no agreement was reached, the Autostadt club announced last week. The point of contention was the salary until the end, according to reports, Wolfsburg did not want to correspond to the ideas of offensive power. Marmoush joined the VfL professionals in 2020 from second representation. Since then he has made 43 competitive appearances, scoring six goals.

In the past three years, Marmoush had spent half a year in the 2nd Bundesliga at FC St. Pauli and then a full season at VfB Stuttgart. For him it was “time to take another step,” said Marmoush when announcing his farewell.
