David López Tomico died on Saturday in a rally race in Ávila, central Spain.

The accident happened on another special test that went from the port of El Boquerón to San Bartolome. Tomico lost control of his Fiat Punto and the car ran off the road.

Tomico and his map reader Natalia Rios Diaz got stuck in the car in a rush. The Ávila fire department finally got the two out of the game, but Tomico died from his injuries.

The special exams for the rest of the day were canceled due to the tragedy.

In his career, Tomico worked both as a driver and as a karter. The Spaniard mainly drove domestic gravel races and historic rallies.

Last year Tomico jumped the Spanish rally champion Sergio Vallejo to the background crowd when the man was leaving for the Dakar Rally. The champion driver gassed up in January in Saudi Arabia at the Astara team, and Tomico served as the team’s chief engineer.

– This sport hit again where it hurts the most. Vallejo Racing is grieving because we lost one of our own, Vallejo’s press release says.

Tomico was described as a passionate motorsport enthusiast who was a persistent doer and a friend like no other.

– We didn’t just lose a mechanic or a team member, we lost a true friend. David, your strength is always with us.

Vallejo also published a photo of the duo on his own Instagram account.

The world of rallying has had a hard time lately. In addition to Tomico, a top driver has also lost his life in the rally at the beginning of the year Craig Breen and the Spanish driver-kart duo Julio César CastrilloFrancisco Javier Alvarez.
