The VfL Wolfsburg footballers have overcome the away hurdle RB Leipzig in the fight for the championship. The Lower Saxons ultimately deservedly won a hard-fought Bundesliga encounter 3-1 (2-1) on Sunday.
However, the dance at three weddings – Bundesliga, Champions League and DFB Cup – is slowly leaving its mark on the “Wolfs”. After a convincing performance in the first half, coach Stephan Lerch’s team reduced their game considerably after the break. With only her second shot on goal in the second half, Svenja Huth put an end to Wolfsburg’s tremors with a 3-1 win (84′).
Cora Zicai (14th) and Kessya Bussy (27th) were successful in the first half for VfL, who had to compensate for the injury-related withdrawal of left-back Janou Levels (74th). Delice Boboy had meanwhile reduced the score to 1:2 for Leipzig (42′).
“She-wolves” with a dominant appearance and dream goals
The spectators in the stadium on Cottaweg saw one-way football towards the Leipzig goal from the start. VfL ran the Saxons’ final line-up very high – seven players were unavailable – and generated a lot of early ball wins through this aggressive approach. The hosts initially barely got out of their own half.
Despite their overwhelming superiority, the offensive actions of the “Wolfs” were not really compelling for the time being. It took a stationary ball to take the lead: After a corner kick from Huth, keeper Elvira Herzog punched the ball directly at the feet of Zicai, who made it 1-0 with a volley.
When Bussy, who was the only striker in the absence of the injured attackers Alexandra Popp and Lineth Beerensteyn, increased the score to 2-0 with a curling shot 13 minutes later, some sort of preliminary decision seemed to have already been made despite the early timing. To date, Wolfsburg have been too dominant and RB too weak for a turnaround to be conceivable.
Boboy scores RB’s first competitive goal against Wolfsburg
But as is often the case in football games, one or two successful actions are enough for a losing team to find their way into the game. This is also the case with lawn ball athletes. The team of coach Jonas Stephan, who comes from Peine, shed some of their restraint after conceding two goals and combined well at times.
Shortly before the break, the Saxons also benefited from the disarray in the VfL defense: the guests lost sight of striker Boboy when Nikoline Dudek crossed, who was able to reduce the gap with a right-footed shot into the far corner.
Unlike the two Wolfsburg goals, it wasn’t a dream goal, but it was one for the books. And for the history books. In the previous four competitive games against each other, the Brause team had remained goalless against the factory club.
Wolfsburg’s strength is dwindling
The goal inspired the Leipzig team. Stephan’s team took control after the break and put VfL under pressure. Four days after the Champions League game against Manchester United (5:2), the guests seemed to be losing their strength a little. Luckily for the Lower Saxony team, Boboy didn’t hit the ball properly from a good finishing position in the 55th minute and keeper Stina Johannes sensed the corner from Lisa Baum’s beautiful free kick (65th).
Meanwhile, there was practically no attack from the guests. It wasn’t until the 84th minute that the North Germans came dangerously close to the Leipzig goal again – and the ball was immediately in the net. However, goal scorer Huth was lucky that her shot, which was actually not particularly placed, was deflected unstoppably for Herzog. This broke the morale of the RB players and the decision was made.
