The club has been running its own demands for some time. Now the Lower Saxony separated from their trainer shortly before the end of the season.

VfL Wolfsburg has released coach Ralph Hasenhüttl. The club announced this on Sunday evening. On Saturday, the “wolves” had lost 0: 4 at Borussia Dortmund – the eighth game in a row without victory. In the two remaining season games, U19 coach Daniel Bauer takes over the team.

The ambitious team will end the season in the no man’s land in the table, and in the past few weeks it was always speculated about the separation from Hasenhüttl. The contract of the most recently heavily struck Austrian actually ran until 2026.

“The results and the development in the past few months have made the decision in us to react now. We have made this decision in close coordination with the Supervisory Board Presidium,” said Managing Director Peter Christiansen.

Hasenhüttl had only taken over VfL from coach Niko Kovač in March 2024 and yet led to relegation. This season, however, the always ambitious VfL ran after his own demands after a promising start to the season.

Wolfsburg was already the third coaching station in the German football Oberhaus for the 57-year-old Hasenhüttl after FC Ingolstadt and RB Leipzig. Before his engagement in Wolfsburg, Hasenhüttl was under contract at FC Southampton in England (December 2018 to November 2022).
