The VfL Wolfsburg footballers will face Real Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday. The “Wolves” can then take another step towards direct qualification for the quarter-finals.

Given their current run of success, Alexandra Popp and VfL are starting the trend-setting premier class duel with Real with a tailwind. “We can approach this with self-confidence,” emphasized the former national player with a view to the Champions League game on Tuesday (9 p.m., in the NDR Livecenter) in Spain. There the team can “hopefully get the next three points”.

Participation in the play-offs is already certain for Wolfsburg, who celebrated their fourth competitive win in a row against SC Freiburg (3-1) at the weekend with nine points in their account.

The Wolfsburg footballers defeat the SC after a significant increase in performance. Thanks to their success, they consolidated second place in the Bundesliga.

VfL women want to reach fourth place

Now VfL is aiming for a place among the top four teams and thus a direct quarter-final ticket. “We are happy, there is a well-known opponent waiting for us again. We have a great starting position, we want to use it,” emphasized coach Stephan Lerch, who can also call on striker Lineth Beerensteyn again.

Beerensteyn fit again

The Dutchwoman had to take a break for three weeks due to tendon irritation. In the most recent premier class game she impressed with a brace in a 5-2 win over Manchester United.

Wolfsburg is currently in third place with two games left. With already assured qualification for the knockout round before the trip to Spain, the team “doesn’t have a lot of pressure, but we’re going there to get something countable – three points at best. We’ll give it our all,” said Lerch, who generally wants to win “every game”: “Why not in Madrid too?”

No more seeing Frohms

There will be no duel with Merle Frohms. The former VfL goalkeeper is currently out due to a torn cruciate ligament. The Spaniards, for whom ex-national player Sara Däbritz also plays, are seventh (seven points) in the table, still behind the Lower Saxony team.

After the duel at Real, national player Sjoeke Nüsken will face national player Sjoeke Nüsken in the final game of the newly introduced league phase at home against Chelsea on December 17th (9 p.m.).
