At the start of the 23rd match day of the third division, VfL Osnabrück wanted to get three points against Würzburg. Coach Daniel Scherning’s team did this impressively. Unlike in the first leg, when the two second division relegated teams separated 1-1, the purple-whites had the opponent firmly under control for long stretches. The Elf is thus further in the promotion race.
On Saturday (2 p.m.) the Lower Saxony could build on this performance. Then they compete against the second representation of Borussia Dortmund. The catch-up game at MSV Duisburg is on Wednesday, February 2 (7 p.m.). The encounter was canceled on December 19 because of a possibly racist fan statement. The investigation has now been discontinued.
Powerful game by Osnabrück is rewarded
Against Würzburg, the purple-whites started powerfully. Marc Heider circled a free kick (10′) with a lot of swerving to the lower edge of the crossbar, from where the ball bounced up again clearly in front of the line. lucky for the guests. With a nice dropkick, Osnabrück’s Ba-Muaka Simakala failed at goalkeeper Hendrik Bonmann (25th). Würzburg fought back and ran, but allowed too much. The North Germans took advantage of this shortly before the break. First Simakala hooked a hook, then it was Heider who shot the ball with his right foot from eight meters (39′). The leadership was deserved.
Fast 2: 0 Kickers pulls the tooth
After the break, Daniel Hägele, the Kickers’ experienced midfield strategist, made a hair-raising mistake in front of his own penalty area. Heider got the ball and pointed it to Aaron Opoku, who took the chance and netted it safely (51′). A supposed goal (61st) was denied to the guests because of an offensive foul.
The people of Osnabrück created more opportunities. The people of Würzburg often made it too easy for them and offered many rooms. The strong Heider had the 3:0 on his feet, but Bonmann got his between them (67th). The Kickers weren’t completely without a chance, but they couldn’t turn the few good scenes into something countable.
