Both Kaenzig and Schindzielorz had assumed their posts during the second half of the 2017/18 season. As spokesman for the management, the Swiss is also responsible for the commercial area, the ex-professional acts as managing director for sports. Since then, VfL has stabilized under her leadership, Kaenzig in particular is considered a haven of peace, which also steered the Ruhrpott club economically through the difficult Corona period. Talks with him are already at an advanced stage: “It still has to be finalized, but we are optimistic. Ilja’s DNA fits VfL 100 percent. He’s a very experienced manager, and always calm and level-headed,” says Villis.

In the past two seasons, VfL had generated a positive transfer balance of 1.1 million euros. While no money was spent on newcomers, the sale of U21 national player Vitaly Janelt to Brentford alone brought 600,000 euros into the coffers. Overall, the Kaenzig/Schindzielorz duo has generated an increase of 150,000 euros on the transfer market since the 18/19 season. In terms of sport, Bochum completed two seasons in midfield in the 2nd Bundesliga before taking over as coach from Robin Dutt to Thomas Reis. With 32 points, VfL is in 11th place nine games before the end of the season and has the prospect of staying up.

The former professional was recently associated with VfL Wolfsburg. According to reports, his contract expires at the end of the season, that of Kaenzig in the summer of 2023 – in both cases Bochum is planning a two-year extension.
