When Stuttgart’s top scorer Serhou Guirassy made a comeback, Guinea missed out on winning the group in the preliminary round of the Africa Cup of Nations. The West Africans lost to defending champions Senegal 0-2 (0-0) in Yamoussoukro on Tuesday, but managed to advance in third place with four points. Second place went to five-time title holders Cameroon, who averted the threat of elimination with two goals in the final phase of a 3-2 (0-0) win against Gambia.

Guirassy, who put VfB on course for the Champions League with 17 goals in the first half of the Bundesliga, had to miss the first two group games due to a thigh strain. However, the 27-year-old had no experience of success against the Senegalese and was substituted again in the 63rd minute – as was Bremen’s Naby Keïta, who was in the starting line-up for the first time.

The goals for superstar Sadio Mané’s team were scored by Abdoulaye Seck (61st) and Iliman Ndiaye (90th). The Senegalese managed to advance with the optimal score of nine points.
