RB coach Werner praises effectiveness

We were a bit more precise and effective in the crucial phases. I think it’s a deserved win“said Leipzig coach Ole Werner.

VfB coach Sebastian Hoeneß assessed the game in a very similar way. “The boys shouldn’t hang their heads. Today it was the little things that made the difference“said Hoeneß in the Sportschau interview after the game.

Stuttgart commands RB wingers first stop

It was a fast-paced first few minutes in Leipzig. RB left-back David Raum took the lead early on in a counterattack. However, he missed the opportunity to cross to his colleagues in time so that VfB goalkeeper Nübel Raum was able to parry his late shot (3′).

Afterwards, the opponents’ approaches to the game crystallized. Since RB relied on its quick transition game, Stuttgart dominated with a lot of possession in the first 30 minutes. VfB was present in the center, won 56 percent of the duels and often had the advantage. The Swabians applied pressure through high pressing.

Attacker Deniz Undav narrowly missed a header (10th). A little later, Maximilian Mittelstädt fired a long-range shot that RB goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi had to spectacularly wipe over the crossbar (18th). For a long time, Leipzig was unable to exploit its own speed and dribbling strength on the wings.

Leipzig is playing increasingly sketchy VfB dizzy

However, after the half-hour mark, VfB’s dominance crumbled. Stuttgart was now often a step too late. The nimble RB offensive artists excelled and core working time began for Stuttgart goalkeeper Nübel. Antonio Nusa failed twice with shots from Nübel (24th, 32nd). Nübel also had to save against Assan Ouédraogo (30th).

A little later, Stuttgart were lucky when Romulo’s shot from the six-yard box just missed the goal (34′). And after a speed combination from Leipzig in a tight space, where Stuttgart again couldn’t keep up, Romulo narrowly missed again (41′).

They were harbingers of what had to come: the Leipzig leadership. However, it was not an RB player, but Chabot who scored into his own goal after a cross from Leipzig’s Diomandé. The Ivorian had previously beaten two Stuttgart players on the wing. After that, Ouédraogo (45th+2) and Nusa (45th+3) could have increased.

Agile attackers as trump cards: Diomandé scores, so does Tomas

Shortly after the restart, the busy Diomandé increased the score to 2-0 for RB. With close control of the ball, he penetrated the penalty area and used a gap for the perfect finish into the short corner.

VfB coach Hoeneß then brought an agile attacker off the bench: Tomas replaced Chris Führich (58th). And the Joker did his job with the third touch of the ball. Stuttgart’s defender Luca Jaquez took the Leipzig chains out of the game with a strong outside-foot through ball – Tomas evaded Willi Orban, went around goalkeeper Gulacsi and pushed in. Only 1:2.

Big shot from Nübel in stoppage time

After that, Stuttgart was more in control again and came up with more shots. In the final phase, however, Leipzig almost sealed the deal. Romulo rose highest on a free kick from space in the half field, but VfB goalkeeper Nübel brilliantly scratched the header off the line (81′).

Not much happened after that, but Leipzig still managed to score their third goal. The otherwise strong Nübel made a big mistake while dribbling, Romulo stole the ball from him and hit the empty goal to make it 3-1.
