Veteran Mitchell Weiser will also lace up his football boots for Bundesliga club Werder Bremen next season. After long negotiations, both sides agreed to extend the contract.

Since the beginning of the year, Weiser had been talking to those responsible at Werder about continuing the collaboration beyond this summer – now the completion was announced on Saturday.

“I’m really looking forward to the new season and that my journey at Werder will continue,” said the 32-year-old. How long his new contract is dated was not communicated. His previous contract would have expired at the end of this month.

“I can hardly wait to be back on the pitch and will do everything to ensure that we play beautiful and successful football,” announced the German-Algerian, who missed the entire last season due to a torn cruciate ligament.

The offensive player did not receive a new contract in Bremen. With the move to Lausitz, a circle closes for the 32-year-old.

Weiser for Coach Thioune “like a new signing”

For him, Weiser is “almost like a new signing,” said Bremen coach Daniel Thioune: “We hope that he comes back in top shape after his injury. His footballing quality is beyond question and will be good for our team.”

Peter Niemeyer, head of professional football at the Bundesliga club, is also optimistic that Weiser will return to form after his long injury break. “We remain absolutely convinced of his quality and are optimistic that Mitch will help us with his creativity in the new season after his knee injury,” explained the 42-year-old.

Part of the Werder team since 2021

Weiser initially moved to Werder from Bayer Leverkusen in 2021 on loan. A year later, the Hanseatic League signed the Troisdorf native. The 32-year-old has played 123 competitive games for Bremen so far, scoring 14 goals. Now he wants to follow up with more: “I’m looking forward to playing in front of the fans again. I missed that a lot last year.”
