Verstappen versus Hamilton – Formula 1 – Formula 1 – Motorsport is the winner

While those in charge were celebrating at the Red Bull command post, the Mercedes crew around team principal Toto Wolff was horrified. No question about it: luck was on its side in Abu Dhabi Red Bulls. That had been different this season. Regardless of how the last race went, it was already clear beforehand: whoever becomes world champion deserves it.

Abu Dhabi as the end of a wild roller coaster ride

Abu Dhabi has taken the ups and downs of emotions to extremes over the entire season, but especially in the last few weeks. Since the race in the USA at the end of October at the latest, it has been a wild roller coaster ride, at the end of which Formula 1 itself is the winner. After years of boredom at the top, the racing series has had a duel this season that is unparalleled in terms of sport.

Two absolute exceptional masters who don’t give each other an inch and consequently test the limits of the rules in many situations. Only four of the 22 races of the season did not go to Verstappen or Hamilton. The last six Grand Prix both of them consistently took first and second place. The other drivers were often just extras in a duel that has now reached its peak for the time being.

The biggest challenge is still waiting for Formula 1

With a few rule changes and revised cars, a lot will change in 2022 – and possibly also shift sportily. But there is much to suggest that the two exceptional talent will outshine everything in the coming year. It’s a blessing for Formula 1 that Hamilton – the one with George Russell gets a new teammate – has extended his Mercedes contract.

It gives the racing series the chance to build on glorious years and to inspire more and more fans. And to win back those that have been lost in the past few years. In terms of sport, the premier class of motorsport is at a high point that few would have expected it to be.
