Max Verstappen is on the Hungaroring near the Hungarian capital Budapest for a catch-up race. The reigning world champion and leader in the World Cup standings did not go further than tenth place in qualifying on Saturday due to technical problems with his Red Bull car. Verstappen has a comfortable lead of 63 points in the World Cup over his first pursuer, Charles Leclerc from Monaco.
The Ferrari driver will leave from third place at 3 p.m. His teammate Carlos Sainz is on the front row next to George Russell. The British Mercedes driver surprisingly captured his first pole position in Formula 1.
Qualifying was very disappointing for Verstappen’s Red Bull team. Sergio Pérez, the Dutchman’s Mexican teammate, already got stuck in the second session. He starts from eleventh place.
After the Hungarian GP, the Formula 1 drivers have a holiday. The season will continue in Belgium at the end of August. The Dutch GP at Zandvoort is scheduled for September 4.
