In protest against the tough restructuring course at the insolvent department store group Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof, warning strikes are expected in several branches on Saturday.

The Verdi union has called on employees at five locations in Hesse to go on all-day warning strikes. She initially left open whether houses in other federal states were also affected. A demonstration by Galeria employees is planned in Gelsenkirchen.

A restructuring plan for the group, which the creditors approved at the end of March, provides for the closure of 47 branches nationwide. Around 4,000 jobs are likely to be lost as a result. The group’s board of directors has warned of work stoppages. They would be “obviously illegal and threaten to cause ruinous damage,” according to a letter to the Verdi leadership that was available to Business Insider. (dpa)
