Venice 2023, the jury: Chazelle, Jane Campion, Gabriele Mainetti

THEwaiting to discover the 80th program Venice Exhibition 2023 (August 30 – September 9) the Biennale has revealed the names that make up the jury that will assign the Golden Lion.

To assist the president of the jury Damien ChazelleOscar winner with La La Landthere will be directors Jane Campion, Mia Hansen-Løve And Laura Poitras, our Gabriel Mainetti with Martin McDonagh (Three posters in Ebbing Mossouri), the Chinese actress Shu Qithe Palestinian actor Saleh Bakri and the Argentine director Santiago Miter.

The jury of the Venice 2023 competition

It’s up to Damien Chazellethe Oscar-winning director of The Landland and the most recent Babylon, preside over the jury that will assign the Golden Lion to the80th Venice Film Festival. It is not the first time that the director has attended the Lido. He had in fact inaugurated Venice 2016 and 2018 with the musical La La Land and with First Manboth played by Ryan Gosling.

Several illustrious colleagues will sit next to Chazelle, including ours Gabriele Mainetti (They called him Jeeg Robot)which in Venice had participated in the Covid period with Freaks OutAnd Martin McDonagh, Irish screenwriter and director who thrilled Lido audiences last year with The spirits of the islandwhile a few years earlier with Three Billboards in Ebbing, Missouri.

The women on the jury: there is Jane Campion

Jane Campionthe first female director in history to be awarded the Palme d’Or for Piano lessons (1993), leads the female parterre of the competition jury. She too returns to Venice after winning the Silver Lion in 2021 with The power of the dog.

Together with her they stand out Laura Poitrasthe American director who last year won the Golden Lion with the documentary All the beauty and the painalso nominated for an Oscar, the Chinese actress Shu Qiwho worked with the master Hou Hsiao-Hsien three times, and the French Mia Hansen-Løvedirector of eight films including The father of my children (2009), Special Jury Prize in the section Un Certain Regard And The things to come (2016), Silver Bear for Best Director at the Berlin Film Festival.

The Horizons jury of Venice 2023

The international jury of the section Horizons of Venice 80 will be chaired by ours Jonas Carpignanodirector of In Ciambra (2017), awarded in Cannes, and by To Clarepresented at Directors’ Fortnight. The directors will be with him Kaouther Ben Hania, Khalil Joseph, Jean-Paul Salomeand former director of the BFI Tricia Tuttle.
