Veen family runs Pink Walk Westerbork: ‘We were busy every day with our sister’s breast cancer’

The Veen family participated with a team of 16. “Our brother passed away this year. Yes, it is actually for our brother. We had a shirt made especially for this. That is why we are all participating,” says an emotional Harry Veen.

Their brother Geert may not have died of breast cancer, but their sister Jantje, who was not present yesterday, did have it. “Yes, you are actually busy with something like that every day. It is your sister. We always have to wait and see how that turns out and how things continue. Fortunately, it all turned out fine,” said Harry.

The 10 kilometer walk went well for the Veen family. “Things are going really well. It is sometimes difficult to keep the whole club together. The sun is shining, there is no rain and we are walking in very beautiful surroundings.”

In between there is time for coffee and petting kittens at a pit stop in Eursinge. And at the end the Veen family lights a candle for brother Geert in the Stefanus Church.

“The final stretch was very tough, but luckily we all accomplished it,” Harry says afterwards. They will definitely be there again next year and will run the same distance.

The Veen family’s walk raised approximately 500 euros. The total final amount of the Pink walk in Westerbork was not yet known at the time this article was published.
