The tournament in Newport, USA, will be played on grass, a surface on which Van Rijthoven has performed excellently this season. He had his big breakthrough by winning the Libéma Open in Rosmalen last month.
At Wimbledon, the Brabander admitted with a wild card then made it through to the fourth round. He was defeated on Sunday after four sets by defending champion Novak Djokovic.
Because there are no points to earn for the world ranking in London due to the exclusion of Russian and Belarusian players, Van Rijthoven remains around the hundredth place in the world ranking.
He therefore needs some good results to participate in the US Open. The last Grand Slam tournament of the year starts on August 29.
In 2000, Peter Wessels caused a stir by winning the Newport ATP tournament. The former number 72 in the world is therefore the only Dutchman on the honors list.
