In the middle of the race, Mathieu van der Poel is hit by a bottle on the traditional Paris-Roubaix journey. After that, the Dutch manifests itself.
Mathieu van der Poel has significantly positioned the Poel after an incident at Paris-Roubaix. The Dutchman was apparently thrown at a drinking bottle around 33 kilometers before the finish line. The campaign had visible consequences – and could now have an aftermath.
“This is unacceptable. It was a full bottle, it weighed half a kilo and I drove at 40 km/h,” said the 30-year-old after the race. The incident is comparable to “as if you were getting a stone in the face. It hurt a lot.” Van der Poel was injured, but ready to fight: he hoped that the perpetrator would be identified “so that we can take legal action”.
Despite the dangerous attack, van der Poel could not be brought out of the concept. He prevailed in the final phase of the race and celebrated his third victory in a row in the traditional classic. In the past, the world champion had been exposed to similar attacks by viewers.
