Intense images: at least 101 dead due to landslide in Congolese mine
More than a hundred people have been killed by a slide in a gold mine in Congo. Initially there were seventy victims, but the number of bodies recovered has now risen to 101. Local authorities reported to the Reuters news agency that the accident occurred on Friday afternoon in the Mulondo Lwalaba mine, near the town of Kolwezi in Lualaba province. It would be an illegal gold mine. Many of the victims are believed to be internal refugees who are moving to the resource-rich south of Congo due to the violence in parts of the country. There they work in illegal, unstable mines where heavy rain often causes fatal accidents. Images of the shocking event are circulating on social media.
