Fan series for the 3rd division
With the help of the community, Transfermarkt will take a detailed look at the 56 teams in the Bundesliga, Bundesliga 2 and Bundesliga 3 in the coming weeks. Which players are the fans looking forward to the most, where is there room for improvement and what is in the squad for 2022/23 for your favorite club? We asked around in the forums and got our opinions – in league three we continue with user “Savarez03” and Borussia Dortmund II.
How do you rate the BVB II squad?
During the summer break there was a change. Head coach Enrico Maassen has moved to FC Augsburg in the Bundesliga, his successor is Christian Preusser. The three top scorers Berkan Taz, Richmond Tachie and Immanuel Pherai left the team. There were also rumors surrounding Antonios Papadopoulos about a departure for the English Championship, Luton Town and Preston North End were considered interested parties. According to the current status, however, he will continue to look for his chance to assert himself at BVB.
When it came to new arrivals, we signed on the one hand external talents like Jayden Braaf from Manchester City and Prince Aning from the youth academy at Ajax Amsterdam, on the other Bradley Fink and Dennis Lütke-Frie from the U19 championship team, who took the next step their development in the U23. And that also makes it clear which direction the team is taking. It’s about the development of talent in the professional area, as best as possible in our first team. This will also ensure that players are temporarily unavailable in the coming season, as they train with the first team and get the chance to show themselves here.
The duel in goal will be exciting, as both Luca Unbehaun and Marcel Lotka will fight for their chance in the first team and both are on the same level in terms of performance. Michael Eberwein, who is drawn back to Rote Erde after his first commitment from 2015 to 2018, could be an important returnee. The 26-year-old midfielder occupies one of the three over-23 starting positions in the squad and is an important element in the squad due to his enormous experience. Eberwein can prove more than 100 games in league three and will help the young team with his qualities on the offensive.

Where do you see a need to catch up by Deadline Day?
The team is strong and well staffed so that you can react very well to failures. I hope that all the players get through in good health, I would like to mention Soumaïla Coulibaly and Marco Pasalic, who were only able to show their talent sporadically last season and were out for long stretches.

What do you expect from the playful appearance of the team?
I expect a similar system from our new coach Preusser as under his predecessor Maassen. The defense will consist of a three-man chain, which will be supported by two rail players in the basic defensive formation. In addition, there is a flexible offensive, sometimes with a three-man attack, but sometimes with a double lead to create a majority in the centre. We will be the team that will make the game in most cases. It means finding playful options to overturn the opposing defense. In addition, high pressing is important when the opponent has possession of the ball, in order to quickly get back into the last third and present the opponent with tasks.
What’s in it for BVB II in 2022/23?
When it comes to goals for the season, my expectations always have to be broken down into the two categories of “sporting performance” and “talent development”. The 3rd league is more balanced in the coming season than ever before. My guess is that teams will be battling for promotion that you’ve seen more likely to be battling relegation before the season and you’ll see secret favorites falling battling to stay in the league.

Our sporting goal must be to get through our game at the beginning and to collect points quickly so that we don’t slip down. When it comes to talent development, the goal is to continue on the path we have successfully taken in the youth field and to give our talents in the 3rd league the opportunity to acclimate to the professional field. Ideally, we manage to train talented players for the first team every year.
