The world football association is offering a special award. The 79-year-old is the first prize winner. He accepts the trophy from his close friend.
On the sidelines of the group draw for next year’s World Cup, FIFA awarded a “Peace Prize” for the first time on Friday in Washington, DC. As “Politico” and “The Athletic” had previously reported unanimously, the “award” was presented to US President Donald Trump. The 79-year-old accepted the award from FIFA President Gianni Infantino on stage at the Kennedy Center.
Trump had repeatedly called for the Nobel Peace Prize, but came away empty-handed when it was awarded in October. Infantino praised Trump’s efforts, among other things, the negotiated ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
In a statement about the launch of the new prize, Infantino said: “In an increasingly turbulent and divided world, it is fundamental to recognize the outstanding contribution of those who work hard to end conflict and bring people together in a spirit of peace.”
The Fifa President said: “Football stands for peace and on behalf of the entire global football community, the Fifa Peace Prize – Football Unites the World – will recognize the enormous efforts of those who unite people and give hope to future generations.” In the future, the Peace Prize will be awarded once a year.
The World Cup runs from June 11th to July 19th and is co-hosted by the USA, Mexico and Canada.
