Matteo Berrettini falls back into the nightmare, who experiences a terrifying day at the US Open. The blue suffers throughout the game against the Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech and then gets hurt, withdrawing from the tournament. Berrettini, one set down and in a very awkward situation, that of having to defend the second set from the Frenchman’s serve, falls in an attempt to hit the ball in full length on the opponent’s attack. Matteo hurts his right ankle, also cuts his elbow (but that’s not what he’s worried about) and leaves the field limping to the applause of the audience. A great bitterness in a cursed 2023 for the Roman. Arthur Rinderknech does something never done before: he enters the third round of the US Open by winning 6-4 5-3 in an hour and 44 minutes, thanks to Matteo’s withdrawal.

The injury seems similar to that of Sascha Zverev almost a year and a half ago, still stuck in the minds of fans. At Roland Garros 2022, the German hurt himself against Nadal with his ankle that turned very badly, screaming at the Paris center. Berrettini’s screams were perhaps less impressive than Zverev’s, but that injury was very serious and blocked Sascha’s season. Let’s hope that after all the nightmares we’ve had, it’s nothing serious.

Berrettini suffered a lot from the opponent right from the start. The French serves perfectly, flawlessly, not conceding anything to Matteo. Berrettini suffers from the good mobility of Arthur, who is in great confidence. After saving 5 break points in 2 different games, Berrettini falls when he serves to defend the set and Rinderknech breaks his serve, taking home the set. In the second partial the music does not change. Arthur goes close to the break in the first game, then finds it in the sixth on the third occasion. Berrettini jumps at 3-5 and gets the first (and only) break point of his game when he has to receive in order not to go down by two sets. Maybe he would have managed to lap the race, we’ll never know, because the ankle twists and takes away all hopes of a comeback. It is truly a cursed year and it is a great pity for the blue.
