Normally Martien Meiland prefers to scream in front of every camera that comes near, but after his car accident he suddenly keeps a remarkably low profile. “Not on camera please!”

Martien Meiland (64) and his daughter Montana (32) were involved in a collision. They were on Montana’s bus when a regional bus rear-ended the vehicle, causing significant property damage, including a heavily damaged windshield. The cause appears to be the bus driver who was briefly distracted by the air conditioning due to the heat.

Not on camera

The fear is there, according to reporter Thom Goderie. “I had contact with Martien this morning,” he says Show news. “I said, ‘How are you doing? Would you like to respond to it on camera?’ He wanted to respond, but not on camera, because he said: ‘I slept very badly last night’, and when you see these images, you will understand that.”

Sandra Schuurhof: “What was that bus driver doing?”

Thom: “Yes, he didn’t pay much attention, I think. He had a very large star in the window, a kind of spider web of glass, Martien called it. But fortunately he was willing to speak to us by telephone.”

Emotional Martien

From one moment to the next you are thrown all the way forward, Martien says by telephone. “You’re in the belt and it’s pressing all the way down on your chest. Well girl, you don’t know what you’re experiencing. I had no idea there was a bus behind us either. Montana looked in her side mirror and says, ‘Dad, it’s a very big bus.'”

He continues: “At one point a young man was standing next to me and I opened the window, but I had no idea that that was the driver. He also started shaking completely and then I said: ‘Oh, child, are you the driver of the bus?’ ‘Yes,’ he says.”

‘Intense, intense’

Then Martien fills up. “Well, it just makes me emotional all over again. It was intense, intense. I also slept very badly last night, because it all hurt when I turned around, but then I thought: there are worse things and I also felt bad for the bus driver.”

“But as soon as I got up this morning, my body was standing and everything went well. I was already working in the garden with the plants we bought yesterday!”
