Unique for Arno Kamminga at World Championships: swimmer wins silver with two others

It hardly ever happens, but Arno Kamminga swam exactly the same time in the World Cup final as the Italian Nicolo Martinenghi and the American Nic Fink. All three swimmers completed the 100m breaststroke at the same time. As a result, the Amsterdammer took a shared silver medal at the World Championship long track swimming in Japan.

Kamminga swam the 100m breaststroke in 58.72 seconds. The other two tapped in the same time and so they all got a second place. Only the Chinese Qin Haiyang was faster with 58.62 than the three.

In advance, Kamminga was the favorite for the part. The absence of Adam Peaty made Kamminga the fastest swimmer ever to compete in the 100-meter breaststroke. Due to overtiredness, he was hardly in the bath at the end of last year and he was only back on level a few weeks before the World Cup. “If I had had a perfect preparation, this would have been a chance in a thousand. Unfortunately, that has not happened now,” Kamminga said afterwards.
