Frits Spits (77) stops after more than half a century as a radio maker. The Eindhoven presenter announced this on Wednesday. The radio maker of the century has been an inspiration for radio lovers for years, including the DJs of Omroep Brabant. Presenter Ronny Balk remembers his creative and poetic way of telling and presenter Hubert Mol has even worked together with Spits. “If Frits turned a record, others could not stay behind, because he has ears for it,” laughs Hubert.
‘Poetic, creative and unique’, as Omroep Brabant presenter Ronny Balk describes the radio veteran. “Frits was groundbreaking with his programs, especially with the evening rush hour,” he says. Ronny cannot compare his way of telling, presenting and announcing songs with any other radio maker. “He could tell in a way with which he made people curious. Frits could you tease So you kept listening. “
In addition, Ronny remembers the way in which striker could make artists great. “If you were played at Frits in the broadcast, you suggested something as an artist. In the time of the evening rush hour there were not many radio stations yet, so everyone listened to Radio 3.”
Frits Ritmeester, as the radio maker is actually called, has been presenting the language state for KRO-NCRV on NPO Radio 1 since January 2014. The program is all about the Dutch language. At its peak in the 1980s, Frits Spits presented the radio program De Avondspits. In the following years, programs such as Time followed, with a view to tomorrow and the stripes of Spits.
The presenter won various prizes in his career. In 1999 he received the silver travel microphone and in 2008 the Marconi Oeuvre Award. That year he was also appointed Knight in the Order of Oranje-Nassau. In 2019 he was elected ‘Radio Maker of the century’.
Omroep Brabant-DJ Hubert Mol is thinking back to a nice collaboration with Spits, in his time at the VARA. “If Frits turned a record, then others could not stay behind, because he has ears for it,” he laughs. If Frits liked a record and made an appointment with artists to turn their record, then he did, Hubert remembers. “He did not get fooled by record companies. He was very correct.”
“He could tell very visually.”
The way in which striker told stories in his programs is still a great inspiration for Hubert. “He played games with the listeners and could tell very visually. Then I almost saw me how I was in a cart of a roller coaster and all came across assignments as a listener,” says Hubert.
In his own program Brabants Bont, Hubert also tries to take the listener with you in his experience. “At the start of my broadcast I often get something out of the news that I am joking about. That is actually inspired by Frits,” he confesses.
In addition to a professional, Hubert remembers him as a driven person. “He likes language and is very passionate about it. Frits is also very collegial and pure as a person.” The DJs think it is a shame that Spits will stop his radio program, but they do not doubt that he will remain an example for many new talents and enthusiasts.
