Union Berlin without Öztunali, Baumgartl and two newcomers

Some prominent names are missing from the 1. FC Union Berlin squad for the group stage of the Europa League.

Paul Seguin and Milos Pantovic, two newcomers to the Bundesliga soccer club, are not among the 24 professionals nominated by coach Urs Fischer. This emerges from a message from the club on Tuesday.

Especially in midfield, the Köpenickers are very broad. Like Seguin and Pantovic, midfielder Levin Öztunali did not make the squad. Central defender Timo Baumgartl is also missing. He is still in the process of building up after his cancer.

Only 24 instead of 25 players nominated

Fischer called only 24 players, 25 would be possible. However, Uefa stipulates that four of them must have been trained as so-called local players in their own offspring. At Union there are only three: goalkeeper Yannic Stein and midfielders Aljoscha Kemlein and Tim Maciejewski. That’s why the Köpenickers are only allowed to nominate 24 professionals.

On Thursday, Union will start the group stage in the first Europa League game at the An der Alten Försterei stadium against Royale Union Saint-Gilloise from Belgium. The other opponents are SC Braga (Portugal) and Malmö FF (Sweden).
