Union Berlin: New signing Yorbe Vertessen disappointed with playing time

Shortly before the end of the winter transfer phase, after much back and forth, Union Berlin finalized the move of Yorbe Vertessen from PSV Eindhoven for 4.75 million euros. After being used in the starting line-up at the start, the offensive player has been on the bench four times. The 23-year-old was “a little disappointed” about that, as he mentioned in a media round on Tuesday (quoted via “Kicker“).

“At first it wasn’t a big deal for me. But now I’m adapting more and more. Now it’s time to get more minutes and start. We’ll see what the coach decides. I just want to help the team,” said Vertessen, who prepared Brenden Aaronson’s winning goal after coming on as a substitute on matchday 22 at TSG Hoffenheim. Last weekend, coach Nenad Bjelica only let him onto the pitch against 1.FC Heidenheim (2:2) in the 82nd minute.

“It was difficult to adapt. I’m a person who maybe has a little more trouble with it,” Vertessen admitted. In a comparison of all winter additions to the Bundesliga clubs, the Belgian is only in 14th place in terms of playing time with 138 minutes. Unlike many others, however, he also missed two matchdays due to the late transfer and is still ahead of prominent newcomers such as Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitiké (118 minutes) and Bayern’s Sacha Boey (110) or Leverkusen’s Borja Iglesias (107).

Union Berlin: Yorbe Vertessen praises solidarity – group formation at PSV

Despite the limited playing time, Vertessen believes he is on the right track. “I feel well received here at Union. I’m happy to be here.” He was particularly impressed by the solidarity among the “Irons”. “At Union the players are more together than a unit. In Eindhoven, on the other hand, there were rather small groups. That’s the biggest difference I’ve noticed in the last few weeks. A lot of things are the same after all.”
