Union Berlin misses many chances: Augsburg is happy – draw in Berlin-Köpenick

FC Union Berlin stormed, had chances to score, hit the woodwork – against a happy FC Augsburg it was not enough to win 2-2 (2-2) on the 14th matchday of the Bundesliga.

After the 0: 5 in Leverkusen, Union coach Urs Fischer had spoken angrily of his “young footballers” and that the bodiless style of play shown in the Rhineland had nothing to do with classic Union virtues.

Becker uses Gikiewicz’ excursion – 1:0

Accordingly, the Berliners wanted to do everything better against FC Augsburg – and that didn’t start badly. Paul Seguin sent a long ball from his own half into Sheraldo Becker’s run. He picked up the pace and suddenly only had the Augsburg keeper Rafal Gikiewicz, who had stormed out of the goal, in front of him. The Union striker casually passed his former team-mate and smashed the ball into the orphaned Augsburg goal from a tight angle – 1-0 (7th).

But the Berliners did not enjoy the leadership for long. In return, they didn’t get a throw-in cleared and the ball landed in front of Florian Niederlechner’s feet after a pinball insert. And he did what a top scorer has to do – from the turn he put the ball from eleven yards right into the bottom corner – it was 1-1 after nine minutes.

Köpenick cheers – Behrens scores to make it 2-1

But Union was and remained “on fire”. In front of an atmospheric backdrop in Köpenick, the home side made a lot of steam – and were soon rewarded with the next goal. After a free kick from Niko Gießelmann, it was Kevin Behrens in the 22nd minute who climbed the highest in the center and headed in from five meters to make it 2-1.

Union didn’t stop and Augsburg’s coach Enrico Maaßen reacted after less than half an hour: In addition to the ailing Mergim Berisha, he took the overwhelmed and already warned Maximilian Bauer out of the back four – Felix Uduokhai came in for him.

Niederlechner acrobatically to the second – 2:2

And luck came back to the people of Augsburg. Or the ability – whatever. In any case, in the 39th minute Niederlechner shot the ball into the net from twelve meters with a side pull to make it 2-2. This was preceded by a crash by Ermedin Demirovic and a rebound that Niederlechner picked up with a volley.

It was a great game at the Alte Försterei – with a lot of speed, passion and pure offensive football. At the beginning of the second section, Unions Gießelmann let the aluminum ring again. His 25-meter shot landed brilliantly on the crossbar in the 48th minute.

Augsburg at Union great chances in luck

In the 68th minute it should have been 3:2, but Augsburg was lucky again. After Seguin’s cross, Behrens climbed the highest again in the center, but only hit the right post with his header from eight yards out.

FCA withdrew almost completely, closed the spaces and slowed the game down. The goal was clear: you wanted to somehow take the point with you. And because the forces of the Berliners were now dwindling, they succeeded in the end.
